Summer Reading List for the Class of 2014...
Please note the book report criteria in the box below

Students entering the fifth grade are expected to read a total of five books over the summer.  Three of those books are mandatory, as indicated by the asterisks at the bottom of the list, and two should be chosen from the following titles:

Frindle (Clements)
Abel's Island (Steig)
Because of Winn Dixie (Di Camillo)
Hatchet (Paulsen)
26 Fairmount Ave. (DePaola)
My Side of the Mountain (George)
The Witch of Blackbird Pond (Spiere)
White Fang (London)
Nory Ryan's Song (Giff)
The Egypt Game (Snyder)

*Mandatory books for all fifth graders:
*Harriet the Spy (Fitzhugh)
*Tuck Everlasting (Babbitt)
*A biography of any historical figure

SUMMER BOOK REPORT CRITERIA:

Please follow these guidelines when writing your summer book reports.  Remember, you should write two reports.  If you wish, one may be about your historical figure, but please do not write about Harriet the Spy or Tuck Everlasting.  Include the following:

*HEADING-your name above the subject on the left margin, and the date above Grade 5 on the right.
*TITLE and AUTHOR-these can be part of a successful transition to the body of your report
*PLOT-what is the story all about?  You should include the climax, or high point of the story
*MAIN CHARACTERS-include only the important characters
*SETTING-where does the story take place.  Is it during a different time period?
*PERSONAL OPINION/REFLECTION-what did you think of the book?  While reading the book did you make any connections to other events in your life?  Could you relate to a character's struggles or joys?  What new insights do you have about life?
*A CATCHY TITLE-if you choose, you may want to title the beginning of your report with an eye-catching phrase, but this part is not mandatory

Your papers should be written in paragraph form.  If you choose to type your papers, they should be 1-2 pages long using double-spaced lines and 12 point font.  If you prefer to write your reports, please use cursive.  Each handwritten report should be closer to 2 pages in length.  Remember to use the writing process.  Plastic report covers are not necessary in the fifth grade, but do staple or paper clip your work to keep it organized.

Here is a link that might help you to gather and organize your ideas before you begin writing - use it only if it helps.  Good luck!
